"'Hurt Road' would be it. Because that's when I didn't really think of the words or lyrics in my head." - Young K

interpreted theme

lyrics

"
you knew and i knew
that this is not an easy road
it's not that you and i didn't know
that not many flowers bloom on this road
"

Many interpret 'Hurt Road' to be a song depicting a dying or exhausting romance, however I always imagine this song to be a representation of the high and lows of life. To portray these contrasting feelings with a comforting song makes you feel its bittersweet, emotional aura. When talking about the song, Young K describes, "There are amazing parts of it but also some hardship. But that goes the same for everyone. I'm not saying this job is harder than any. I was thinking that then I try to think of good things I can feel and find. And there's so many."

flower metaphor

lyrics

"
the flowers that are seen from time to time
I didn’t know how precious they were
because they’re so beautiful and lovely
should we stay here?
"

A recurring symbol in 'Hurt Road' is the reference to precious flowers. On After School Club, Young K explains, "I wanted to say ‘Hurt Road’ there is a part where we talk about how precious a flower on the road is. It captures the meaning of the whole song. When walking on the road aren’t always flowers but we keep on walking because of the flowers." This quote, to me, seems to confirm this song is far from a romance song. Although there's frequent references to another person standing with the speaker, I picture both beings as the same person reflecting on themselves.

favorite lines

lyrics

"
how am I these days?
when you see me
I wonder if I look like I'm okay
I don't know what kind of expression I'm doing these days
"

I think the beauty of Young K's lyric writing lies in his connection to emotion and his connection to the listener. Rather than plainly describing a sad feeling, the lyrics show a disconnected confusion, as if the speaker isn't paying attention to themselves. The precious flowers on the road breaks up this foggy period with a glimmer of hope. "Young K recites the last stanza of 'Hurt Road', referencing flowers as a symbol of some of the amazing things life has to offer, and also the sole inspiration of the song." (tmrw Korea)
